Abstract

Small and medium enterprises in Nigeria, particularly in North Central, face intense competition due to rapid technological advancements and growing customer demands, making consistent profitability challenging. To remain competitive, the managers of those businesses increasingly rely on intelligence to gain market insights, secure a competitive edge, and improve overall business performance. This study examines the effect of product and technology intelligence on performance of small and medium enterprises in North Central Nigeria. This study adopted a survey research design with population of 130,959 registered SMEs in North Central, Nigeria, sample size of 399 was determined for the study using Taro Yamane sample size determination formular and used stratified random sampling to select the respondents. The study used questionnaire as the instrument for data collection. The data was analyzed using partial least square structural equation modeling. The study found that product intelligence has positive and significant effect on performance of SMEs in North Central, Nigeria at 5% level of significant, while technology intelligence has positive but insignificant effect on performance of SMEs in Nasarawa State at 5% level of significant. The study therefore concludes that product and technology intelligence influence performance of small and medium enterprises in North Central, Nigeria. The study recommends that SMEs owners and managers in North Central Nigeria should continue to improve technology and product intelligence strategy. This can be achieved through adopting technologies that complement their existing product offerings, such as automation and e-commerce tools, to increase efficiency and enhance their overall performance, streamline operations, and drive innovation, which could eventually lead to more significant business growth and profitability.
