Abstract

The declining level of performance of SMEs in Nigeria is alarming and calls for a study of this nature which examined the effect of talent management on performance of small and medium enterprises in North central, Nigeria. Talent management was proxied by talent acquisition and talent motivation. Survey design was adopted wherein data was collected using structured questionnaire from a sample of 406 registered SMEs selected using stratified random sampling technique from a total of 130,862 SMEs in north central Nigeria. Data collected were analyzed using ordinary least squares regression and the study found that talent acquisition has a positive and significant effect on performance while talent motivation revealed a negative and significant effect on performance. Therefore, the study recommends that SMEs should build a positive and attractive brand image that showcases their culture, values, and the benefits of working there as this will automatically attract suitable employees to the company for selection. Also, SMEs should ensure that employees' roles and responsibilities are aligned with their skills, interests, and the organization's goals. This will help them feel their work has purpose and impact. In addition, SMEs should offer flexible working arrangements to help employees maintain a healthy work and family life. Also, they should implement a comprehensive recognition program that acknowledges and celebrates both individual and team accomplishments.
